Beware - I still claim (sad, eh?) to have a near-complete archive (on my own PC, not this nasty Google nonsense!) of effectively *all* posts on uk.r.b.p since the very first I saw, on 7 June 1996! With no direct responses on UK.RBP (where I've been successfully ignoring them both), it could cause a thread on UK.RBP, started by those two, but I think that the benefit of teaching some people about the risks involved might be worth that. Hopefully more Usenet newbies read the text, and hopefully it will educate them a little bit about trolls and such. Did the River Kent in Cumbria. It seemed to be at a nice level with enough things to keep everyone amused. The long grade 3/4 looks nothing like it does though in pictures; some of the stoppers seem much larger. One paddler in a Savage Skeetor (OC-1) got a couple of 'intentional' low-angle cartwheels to prove the point. A couple of paddlers tried to do the weir with varying degrees of success; I personally thought that the inner tube being recirculated mid-river was a subtle hint not to try it. ;-) The L-shaped ledge was rather funny though; I took the line as far left as possible (went well with a nice soft landing) though a couple unintentionally tried the middle line which went badly. A quick rescue later and the group blasted down Force Falls (with a 100% roll/swim rate). :-)

 г д‘ You have to pay about ?20 to join the festival. This entitles you to one coaching session and one river tour. Level on the section down to Alston was a little low and a bit bony. Both sections had enough water but could have used more. as for the dart we'd better pray for some more rain tonight.... either that or some surfing this weekend An excellent trip. Ended up just on the Usk - Sennybridge to Aberbran. It was just below flood level. Big waves and the first 2 drops just didn't exist. It seems that more and more people are only interested in moving water, and freestyle - and hence don't spend much time on flat water. The progression of Star Tests doesn't seem to apply. Many people take 3* so they can go to HPP or Teeside or wherever. Of all the 4* paddlers I know, none ever took 1* or 2*. Plym below Shaugh bridge...fast grade 4 for the first few hundred yards until just around the first bend you see below the bridge...quite a wakeup! But then eases dramatically in gradient and grade, good fun, no nasties.

At this level, the Dart loop will have some good surf waves and the splat rock (Lovers Leap) may not be everybodies' idea of a playspot with a rather large cushion wave. There will be few eddies and loads of trees in the river. Top high water playwaves are just below New Bridge and at the top of Lover's Leap rapid.

г° Chas To work on the river in New Zealand you *must* have a current first aid certificate (CPR refresher every 12 months, other 3 yearly) and some form of rescue training.
