Contact lenses in my experience get washed out, especially when I open my eyes to try and work out which way is up. I have paddled for years with a my glasses strapped to my head with a neoprene strap (available from sport shops etc). I've never lost a pair yet, despite some epic swims and trashings. But it was looooow. There were about 300 of us, so we broke up into little groups to achieve maximum faff. My group went first, and we scraped the whole blasted river to the end at Ivybridge. We waited around for the others, and then...the river started rising very fast, until it was higher than I've ever paddled it. Not sure whether we were lucky or unlucky for missing this...we walked up to the gorge to see the others, and there was an impressive amount of carnage, lots of swimmers and stray boats...he he he he. Most of us had a go at the falls in town, which were pretty lively (I showed how it wasn't done, on video too) and then regrouped for an upper Dart trip. But after a while, paddlers tend to ignore the paddle and try and see the result of the stroke. With regard to the small/big boat, I agree that there are differences in forward paddling techiques depending on type of boat, but the main question is, how do you get on with the journeying aspect of the awards,(specially at 4* level)in a boat that is not designed move out of a playspot? Should there be seperate 4* & 5* awards for freestlye? as there are for surf and sea?
